Careful, Illuminating and Necessary Scholarship

The claim of the book is not to explicate Nietzsche per se (though it does a good job of that along the way), but rather to examine how Nietzsche was taken up by a specific twentieth century French tradition, usually identified as post-structuralist or deconstructionist. For anyone working on Deleuze, Derrida or Foucault, this book will be invaluable for understanding the philosophical background that informs their work.

Shcrift does an excellent job of situating the twentieth century French reception of Nietzsche both philosophically and historically. In doing so, Schrift does us the great service of both illuminating their work and showing us what is at stake in their arguments vis-à-vis the philosophical tradition.

Given that the work of Deleuze, Derrida and Foucault continue to influence academic thought in the US, while often being poorly understood and decontextualized, this book is necessary reading. It will be an asset to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers alike.

Incomplete

There are some things worth learning in this book. However, the characters reviewed are all postmodernists. Schrift is utterly tolerant of the lunacy most of them write. In fact, Schrift is one of the postmodernizers of Nietzsche. He wants Nietzsche to worship at the feet of Derrida along with himself. Schrift does not review, for example, Alain Finkielkraut, who is more popular in France than any of the PoMo big shots, and who does not share their opinion of Nietzsche. He ignores Julien Benda as well. And he never mentions Clement Rossett -- who had the temerity to point out that the entire movement claims to be Nietzschean, when nothing could be further from the truth. The book is selective, and suspect becasue of that.

Insightful, accessible, and provocative...a must read!

Got my copy of the book just a few weeks ago and I started reading it immediately. Typically I can't read academic books cover-to-cover, but this is not your average academic textbook. I found myself reading the opening chapters, then coming back to them time and time again during the week. Strayhorn, whose work I know fairly well, offers an insightful argument for the importance of student belonging, especially for marginalized and minoritized groups in higher education. His analysis is supported by data from surveys and interviews, as well as his own thoughts about the topic. Together, they make the book informative, accessible, INTERESTING, and provocative, all at once. I highly recommend it to others interested in the topic. Even if you're not, you'll likely be interested by the end of the book. Kudos!

The book is a fine edition for me. I like it's size (portable but not too small for easy reading). The selections are the poems I wanted, & the translating by A. E. Flemming seems superb---preferable to my other edition of Rilke.

Flemmings translation is easy and 'readable'. His use of meter, rhythm, and diction makes his translations accessible to the average poetry aficionado. This translation preserves Rilke's mysticism and lyrical quality.

About the Author

Cecelia Lynch is a professor in the department of political science at the University of California, Irvine. She is one of the original members of the "Methods Cafes" at the American Political Science Association, a forum for discussing interpretive methodologies and acted as a faculty mentor at the NSF-funded Interpretive Methods and Methodologies workshop. Why Disability Matters to Justice

I reviewed this book for the spring issue of Tikkun Magazine. In short, I believe it is a feminist classic, opening our eyes to the obvious. The simple point is that neither the disabled nor those who care for them can participate in social life according to a standard of rational, autonomous individuality. The disabled often don't have the autonomy, the caretakers don't have the time or energy. Kittay's book opens up a whole field of discussion: how to reorient our concepts of jutice and community in light of the obvious facts of the different ways in which we are dependent on each other, and on what such dependence can cost those who take it on. Essential reading for ethics and social theory.

Fantastic Resource

This book is a magnificent work filled with easily executed exercises to demonstrate diversity and social justice practices. If you are needing a training exercise, an exploration of a topic such as gender or race, or possibly an activity for a classroom or business diversity training - this is your one stop shopping resource!

It also offers many practical examples of quizzes, activities and other items that can be used for whatever issue you want to talk about. The references and extensive resource list provide for further work in areas of race, gender, ability and other subjects on diversity. There are even suggested curriculum formats provided in the appendix.

I cannot say enough about the usefulness of this book, the ease of using it for all levels of knowledge and the variety of ways it can be used for diversity education.

This book was very instrumental in helping me to educate and teach others about a topic that is hard to approach in today's society. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested inchanging the current status of society by encouraging others to critical evaluate their own actions, thoughts and behaviors.

If you haven't picked up this book, you need to. An excellent resource to begin your journey towards an oppression free society and an educated society. I highly recommend this book for anyone currently teaching in any type of classroom.

Establishing an interdisciplinary connection between Migration Studies, Post-Colonial Studies and Affect Theory, Méndez analyzes the symbolic interplay between emotions, cognitions, and displacement in the narratives written by and about Dominican and Dominican-Americans in the United States and Puerto Rico. He argues that given the historic place of creolization as a marker of national, cultural, and social development in the Caribbean and particularly the Dominican Republic, this cultural process is not magically annulled in Caribbean immigrations to the U.S. Instead, this book illustrates the numerous ways in which Dominicans’ subjective interpretation of their experiences of migration and incorporation into U.S. society, seen through the filter of multiple creolizations of the past, are woven into their written works as a series of variations on Americanness and Dominicanness. Through close readings of selected writings by Pedro Henríquez Ureña, José Luis González, Junot Díaz, Josefina Báez, Loida Maritza Pérez among others, Méndez argues that emotional creolizations operate as a psychological parameter on immigrant populations as they negotiate their transcultural status against the ideological norms of assimilation in their new host country. Consequently, he proposes that this emotional creolization is dialectical ― that is, it not only affects diasporic populations, but also changes the norms and terms of assimilation as well.

Partially interesting

This is effectively the manifesto of Gay Men Fighting AIDS, a London-based group consisting of gay men, umm, fighting HIV/Aids in the gay community.
You'll notice that the word 'gay' appears a lot in the first paragraph, well that's like the book. So, although much of the material in the book is relevant to any one interested in men who have sex with men, whether they identify as gay, bisexual, straight (yep!) or have no sexual idenity as such, Edward King really isn't interested in anything other than the gay identified ones.
So, one section quotes extensively from a paper in "Risks Worth Taking", the report of a 1991 conference. The paper talks about how the Terrence Higgins Trust (the leading UK HIV organisation) came about and King praises it as an example of a community based group. Just about the only bits he doesn't quote are the lines along the lines of 'because virtually all the THT's founders were white gay men, we didn't do enough for bisexuals or black/Asian men'.
Curiously the beloved GMFA has made exactly the same mistake.
Sections of the book are excellent -- especially the one on the risks of oral sex -- but overall it's a Curate's Egg as parts of it stink.

Insiteful, Informative. Love it!

I found this book to very informative and insightful. However I thought that some of the dialougue was hokey. This tells you pretty much everything you probably already know, but there are a few extras that I didnt know and it helps. There are alot of different siuations covered from intimacy, different types of contraceptives to loosing your lover to AIDS.
