An amazing collection.

This book has a myriad of different articles, some I agreed with and some I didn't, but they were all very in-depth and interesting. Well, most of them were interesting. The 13 Going on 30 essay was a little more existential than I could grasp, but for the most part they're all relatively readable if you already know a little something about feminist theory. I got this book for my birthday, and I can say it is one of the best gifts I've gotten. Seriously love it.

This is a wonderful comprehensive view of the different lenses through which we view others and oppress others. It's pretty heavy reading, so plan on spending a lot of time with it. Great for anyone who is in any type of helping profession: teachers, police officers, doctors, nurses, counselors, etc.

Middle-class sociology at its worst.

This book proves how rhetoric of "diversity and social justice" can be easily manipulated into serving the interests of the oppressive status quo. Readers with an interest in truly fighting exploitation and domination will not find much (if anything) that is helpful in this volume. The readings are carefully selected so as not to be offensive to the sensibilities of middle-class liberal American sociologists.

The editors even present Hilary Clinton's UN address as some sort of feminist statement! How anyone who is complicit in the mass killing of women of color in the middle east can be considered feminist is beyond me. The editors clearly do not understand, or do not care, how imperialism and mass slaughter are so often justified by presenting the ruling elite of an imperialist power as being "tolerant" or "enlightened." That is role of the liberal Democrats in the US. So why should their spokespeople be featured in a reader about social justice?!

David Van Leer puts forward here a series of readings that aim to identify what he calls the "queening" of America, a process by which "rhetorics and situations specific to homosexual culture are presented to a general readership as if culturally neutral." The Queening of America examines how the invisibility of gay male writing, especially in the popular culture of the 1950s and 1960s, facilitated the crossing of gay motifs in straight culture. Van Leer then critiques some current models of making homosexuality visible (the packaging of Joe Orton, the theories of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, the rise of gay studies), before concluding more optimistically with the possible alliances between gay culture and other minority discourses.

The book queer theory should have made its ur-text...

Van Leer's book is everything we want from gay and lesbian (and queer) theory. Written in extremely lucid, beautifully crisp prose, Van Leer looks closely at how "the closet" could and did function in important ways in mid-20th c. America. He returns theory to the masses here--offering an analysis that is truly accessible to all readers, academic and non-academic alike. Moreover, he pays close attention to minority subcultures and their intersections; he is not solely interested in gay, white male specificity. In this respect alone, the book is completely novel and important--evidencing a respect for all minority populations existing within hegemony. A theoretical tour-de-force and a treat to read, "The Queening of America" is the book we all should have turned to in queer theory's nascent period. It's a shame it isn't read and cited more often.

"This volume, originally organized as a symposium under the auspices of the Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania, adds significantly to knowledge about female initiation throughout Melanesia and the rest of the world. It contains substantive chapters on eight different cultural groups in disparate locations in the area...and every chapter not only contributes interesting data but advances theoretical and analytical understandings of ritual process in general. The volume is a "must" for anyone interested n ritual or Melanesia, but I recommend a much wider reading. All who have an interest in ritual, feminist analysis, gender, or contemprory anthropological theory will be well served by this collection "Center For Pacific Islands Studies."

About the Author
Paul B. Roscoe is professor of anthropology at the University of Maine. He is a frequent contributor to anthropology journals, including American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, and Current Anthropology, and is co-editor (with Nancy Lutkehaus) of Gender Rituals: Female Initiation in Melanesia. The 1992 recipient of the Royal Anthropological Institute's Curl Essay Prize, he has an archival specialization in ancient Polynesia.
