A good introduction to leadership theory
By Dr Neil MacNeill
Matthew Lynch A Guide to Effective School Leadership Theories

Leadership style is not unlike a professional golfer's choice of clubs. Playing at St Andrew's requires a different choice of 14 clubs than a professional would select for short hilly course. The same holds for school leadership in different contexts, and a major problem for neophyte principals is that they often have only one leadership club in the golf bag.

Hmmm, the starting place for this review is that the title is a misnomer. Unless I am having a couple of really bad days there was very little about effective schools or school effectiveness theory in the book. To me, the book is an aggregation of leadership theories that can be used effectively (or ineffectively) in schools. The point being made is that adopting a version of any leadership style may not guarantee that a school attains effective school status. Notwithstanding this issue, the book contains a good discussion of some 10 leadership styles.

Lynch provides a good starting point for school leaders embarking on a new career. It is an easy read, and will provide an introduction to a complex job in which sand traps and water hazards will be the least of your challenges.

Leadership Theory Explained for the Modern Educator
By Roger D. Launius
I was first exposed to leadership theories more than 25 years ago when I was asked to read while working for the U.S. Air Force, along with everyone else on the Military Airlift Command staff, “Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun.” It was a tongue-in-cheek discussion of the principals of leadership written by Wess Roberts designed to bring to the fore best practices in management. I have tried to maintain relatively up to date on this subject ever since. I mention this earlier leadership book to point up the necessity of retreading, revising, and reemphasizing leadership in the present. If we ever needed this skill it is in the current environment, and if we need it more than in the educational environment I cannot think of where.

I am pleased that Matthew Lynch has published “A Guide to Effective School Leadership Theories,” an important explanation of theory and practice for those engaged in school administration. This is an elegant book, well researched and written, that offers a bridge between theoretical analysis and practical application. Lynch emphasizes ten strategies that are discussed in many settings, but with a specific applicability to educational leadership.

This is very much a text book. Lynch focuses attention on leadership techniques in instruction, transformation, ethics, and the like. In a chapter devoted to each arena he offers an opening anecdote or vignette to illustrate the issue, followed by a discussion of the history and evolution of the strategy, critiques, research verification and alteration, summation of current status, and questions and activities. These are quite well structured for in-service training sessions and teach workshops.

Overall, this is an excellent handbook of the current state leadership theory applied to the educational enterprise. It may not have the panache of “Leadership Secrets of Attila the Hun” but it is an exceptionally useful how-to-do-it book.

Framing Sarah Palin: Pit Bulls, Puritans, and Politics, by Linda Beail, Rhonda Kinney Longworth

Sarah Palin’s 2008 vice presidential candidacy garnered tremendous levels of interest, polarizing the American public―both Democrats and Republicans alike. While many have wondered who she "really" is, trying to cut through the persona she projects and the one projected by the media, Beail and Longworth analyze why she touches such a nerve with the American electorate. Why does she ignite such passionate loyalty – and such loathing? How did her candidacy mobilize new parts of the electorate?

Using the notion of "framing" as a way of understanding political perception, the authors analyze the narratives told by and about Sarah Palin in the 2008 election – from beauty queen, maverick, faithful fundamentalist and post-feminist role model to pit bull hockey mom, frontier woman, and political outsider. They discuss where those frames are rooted historically in popular and political culture, why they were selected, and the ways that the frames resonated with the electorate.

Framing Sarah Palin addresses the question of what the choice and perception of these frames tells us about the state of American politics, and about the status of American women in politics in particular. What do the debates engendered by these images of Palin say about the current roles and power available to women in American society? What are the implications of her experience for future candidates, particularly women candidates, in American politics?

Review

"Beail and Longworth have written the type of book that many of us who study women as political communicators have been waiting to see on the market. These insightful critics offer a window on Sarah Palin as a phenomenon on the US political scene. This analysis addresses rhetorical appeals to gender, race, and class that unite, divide, and polarize the US populace."

―Patricia A. Sullivan, State University of New York, New Paltz

"Hockey Mom, Beauty Queen, Political Outsider, Frontier Woman, Post-Feminist Icon. Whether or not Sarah Palin holds political office ever again, there is no question that she changed the way that people think about women in presidential politics. Framing Sarah Palin helps us to understand the multifaceted nature of her surprisingly strong popular appeal, revealing the complex and dynamic relationship between pop culture and electoral politics."

―Susan Burgess, Ohio University

"A wonderful, extensive account of public commentary about Sarah Palin specifically, and women and politics broadly. Beail and Longworth miss nothing and offer readers a detailed account of how gender, ideology and electoral politics intersect in American culture. Their observations remind us that women candidates encounter distinct challenges from men, but also that partisan differences among women cannot be overlooked. Students and scholars of political science, communications and women's studies will be especially interested in this fine and thorough book."

―Ronnee Schreiber, San Diego State University

"Framing Sarah Palin is a book that provides insights into the intersection of gender and partisan American politics that scholars from many disciplines can further explore. It does identify for women interested in running for office the importance of narratives and their potential pitfalls."

- Diana B. Carlin, e-International Relations, April 2013

Learning gardens are not only a good idea whose time has come
By Karen Walasek
This book is worth its weight in kale, even if you just read the preface and the first chapter, “Modern Imperatives for Life and Learning” which examines not only the practical side of how and why school gardens can be implemented, it moves beyond to the greater conversation of how living gardens create a culture for a more sustainable future. All teachers and policy makers should read this book. Learning gardens are not only a good idea whose time has come, but they are much needed and often ignored part of a whole person’s education.

Harnessing the Power of Equine Assisted Counseling
By SHERRY SINGLETON
Great information. We have Barnabas Horse Foundation for Children and are using EAP to help children who have been traumatized. We were certified by Greg Kiersten of the O.K. Corral series in EAP. I constantly look for valid information to continue education and build our resources. This book is a great resource and tool. She effectively gives the reasoning behind the different exercises. It is written for clinical professionals, but as a layperson to psychology ( I am the horse expert), I did not find her book hard to read and understand.

Wonderful resource
By Kicking Mimi
This book is a great resource for my therapy office. Not only full of easy to understand techniques that can be done with clients, but they went the extra effort to link each with activity with clinical rational for incorporating horses into therapy. I epically like the section by Parelli and I look forward to the second addition and many more activites that I can use.

Pretty good book, worth the price
By Janet L. Cameron
This book has many examples of games and exercises for EFT. The explanations of the games and exercises are well written and easily understood. The only drawback is that those games and exercises are really on a very basic level and rely almost exclusively on the benefits of the limbic connection between horses and humans. In short, the book doesn't have exercises that require more of the student and the horse than the good old touchy-feely benefits. Nonetheless, I would recommend this book as a starting point for anyone who wants to include EFT in their program.

A good read
By Hussain Abdul-Hussain
Despite its small and squeezed font, the content is attractive as the book thoroughly covers the 8-year Iraq-Iran war.

With a good amount of information, mostly from news reports, Hiro produces an account of the history of animosity between the two oil rich neigbors.

Hiro extensively covers statements by Iraqi and Iranians officials and also includes statements by officials of foreign governments who were involced in the conflict.

Hiro, however, fails to describe the brutality of the Saddam Hussein regime and at times writes that the deposed Iraqi dictator enjoyed popular support. This is, by most other accounts, far from the truth.

Despite its extensive coverage, the book sometimes quickly surveys important issues such as the Iraqi usage of WMDs.

Hiro also reports, with minimum details, the tip of the balance in Iraqi favor. He does not provide enough information about the Iraqi military operations that reversed the course of the war.

Overall, the book is one of a few that documents one of the longest wars in modern history.

Good synopsis of the Iran-Iraq conflict
By Jeremy H. Burton
"The Longest War" by Dilip Hiro provides a thorough political history of the Iran-Iraq conflict. Those with little to moderate exposure to the war will probably find it interesting, while more knowledgeable students of the era will most likely gain little insight, as it is largely based on press clippings.

Readers of other military histories will be disappointed to find a lack of primary evidence into motives; however, it is important remember that such evidence was not available at the time of publication, as it is with, for example, a history of World War II.

One interesting factor about this book is that it was (apparently) written prior to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1991. This has positive and negative effects. For instance:

(1) Hiro does not have the benefit of being able to use future events to improve his analysis. For example, given the later invasion of Kuwait, Sadaam Hussein's invasion of Iran seems much more like a megalomaniac stab at natural resources (and their commensurate power) than the establishment of a bulwark against Shi'ite Islamism.

(2) Hiro's analysis does not suffer from bias created by later events. For example, American support of the Iraqi regime in the latter stages of the war is presented in the context of (a) Cold War competition with the Soviet Union, (b) protecting American interests in the gulf states from Iranian interference and (c) the political climate in America following the Iran-Contra affair. Today, it is common to see such support described as misguided or even hypocritical, given what happened in 1990-1 and in 2003. Hiro lays out reasons for American support to Iraq that were indeed very rational given what was known to American policymakers at the time.

Excellent history.
By A Customer
Lasting eight years, and at a cost of over a trillion
dollars and a million casualties, this savage
conflict (which featured chemical weapons and genocide
against the Kurds), largely unknown to most
Westerners, is far from over.

Hiro, an expert on Middle Eastern affairs, traces
the ancient animosities and territorial
aspirations which animated the slaughter, describes
in detail the actual fighting, and connects the
war to the Great Powers which covertly aided the
belligerents.

Finally, in his Epilogue, he notes the "no war, no
peace" status of the region and warns of an
arms-race between Iran and Iraq, which bodes ill for
the stability of an area which contains most of the world's
crude oil reserves.

Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching: A Beginner's GuideFrom Routledge

Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching provides educators with easy and practical ways of using games to support student engagement and learning. Despite growing interest in digital game-based learning and teaching, until now most teachers have lacked the resources or technical knowledge to create games that meet their needs. The only realistic option for many has been to use existing games which too often are out of step with curriculum goals, difficult to integrate, and require high-end technology.

Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching offers a comprehensive solution, presenting five principles for games that can be embedded into traditional or online learning environments to enhance student engagement and interactivity. Extensive case studies explore specific academic perspectives, and featured insights from professional game designers show how educational games can be designed using readily accessible, low-end technologies, providing an explicit link between theory and practice. Practical in nature, the book has a sound theoretical base that draws from a range of international literature and research.

"The book offers the fundamentals, from the rudimentary to the quite advanced ... Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching is an impassioned, valuable book, entirely worthy of educators' consideration." ―Reflective Teaching

Essential guide for educated beginners
By Harviainen Jussi T
As its subtitle suggests, Using Games to Enhance Learning and Teaching is a beginner's guide. In this case, however, that refers to people who already have teaching experience and who are looking into expanding their methodology to include games. The editors and the authors have done an excellent job at balancing the basics of educational game theory with practical examples, making the book easy to understand yet academic enough to work also as a tool for convincing the more sceptical. Excluding some (in my opinion) slightly too optimistic parts on competition and contextualization, the authors are also wisely critical of what they say, way beyond most proponents of game-based learning and/or gamification.

The examples cases are drawn especially from alternate reality games, so if one is looking for guidelines on just using some games in the classroom, Whitton's own, excellent "Learning with Digital Games" (2010) may be a more suitable starting point. For those looking to create something a bit more all-encompassing, this is your book. Despite its beginner-friendly style, it also offers a fine list of references for further reading, although I must say that given the topics, the absence of some key texts (e.g. Juul's "Casual Games" and Montola, Stenros & Waern's "Pervasive Games: Theory and Design") was something of a surprise.

All in all, Whitton and Moseley have created a very useful volume that should see a lot of use both in the hands of enthusiastic teachers of all kinds, as well as something that should be given to people who are potentially interested in supporting learning games, yet remain wary of them. It presents a very convincing argument on why, how, where and with what limitations game-based learning can be applied.

Confronting Dogmatism in Gifted EducationFrom Routledge

This title looks at the dogmatism that limits the perspectives of professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders in gifted education. In a field where concepts and definitions surrounding high ability have been contested for many years, there is increasing interest in clarifying these notions today. This book offers such clarity, searching outside of the predominant conceptual frameworks that dominate thinking about giftedness and talent, and examining ways in which this conceptual fog stunts and warps the development of gifted minds and limits the effectiveness of curriculum development and instruction. The book directly addresses the connection between dogmatism and high ability, exploring ways in which otherwise bright individuals can make unintelligent decisions.

Each contributor in this edited collection connects educational theory with teaching practice, examining the impact of policies such as No Child Left Behind. The chapters also explore the ways in which economic, cultural, and academic contexts affect both the gifted mind and education of the highly able in America and the rest of the world, while making recommendations for positive changes that can be enacted within gifted education in the future.

The Fantasy of Family: Nineteenth-Century Children's Literature and the Myth of the Domestic Ideal (Children's Literature and Culture (Pape

The myth of the Victorian family remains a pervasive influence within a contemporary Britain that perceives itself to be in social crisis. Nostalgic for a golden age of "Victorian values" in which visions of supportive, united families predominate, the common consciousness, exhorted by social and political discourse, continues to vaunt the "traditional, natural" family as the template by which all other family forms are gauged. Yet this fantasy of family, nurtured and augmented throughout the Victorian era, was essentially a construct that belied the realities of a nineteenth-century world in which orphanhood, fostering, and stepfamilies were endemic.

Focusing primarily on British children's texts written by women and drawing extensively on socio-historic material, The Fantasy of Family considers the paradoxes implicit to the perpetuation of the domestic ideal within the Victorian era and offers new perspectives on both nineteenth-century and contemporary society.

Digital Labor: The Internet as Playground and FactoryFrom Brand: Routledge

Digital Labor calls on the reader to examine the shifting sites of labor markets to the Internet through the lens of their political, technological, and historical making. Internet users currently create most of the content that makes up the web: they search, link, tweet, and post updates―leaving their "deep" data exposed. Meanwhile, governments listen in, and big corporations track, analyze, and predict users’ interests and habits.

This unique collection of essays provides a wide-ranging account of the dark side of the Internet. It claims that the divide between leisure time and work has vanished so that every aspect of life drives the digital economy. The book reveals the anatomy of playbor (play/labor), the lure of exploitation and the potential for empowerment. Ultimately, the 14 thought-provoking chapters in this volume ask how users can politicize their troubled complicity, create public alternatives to the centralized social web, and thrive online.

Review

"Almost 20 years since we were promised a new era of creativity, connectivity, and commerce by the rise of the World Wide Web, we are finally able to ask hard questions about how digital ecosystems have affected human capabilities. This book is essential to any effort to make sense of the digital economy and its effects on real people around the world." Siva Vaidhyanathan, author of The Googlization of Everything―and Why We Should Worry

"Internet business models increasingly rely on the uncompensated and crowd-sourced contributions of individuals. This important book brings together leading thinkers to shine a much needed and critical light on what this practice means for the future of markets, freedom, and individual autonomy." Laura DeNardis, author of Protocol Politics: The Globalization of Internet Governance

"Scholz provides a timely collection on digital labor and the conflation of work and play online...The collection has many strengths. It includes works from scholars at varying ranks and foundational works on digital labor (e.g., essays by Tizania Terranova and Lisa Nakamura). It will prove valuable for cultural critique of new media, for both seasoned and novice scholars, and for those interested in social and political implications of social media, user-generated content, and algorithm-enabled Web technologies."
D Shepherd, CHOICE

'Overall, Digital Labour represents an original set of criticisms of the Internet from an overarching Marxist perspective, making the book valuable reading for scholars and students of media studies, cultural studies and the sociology of technology. It offers unique perspectives on the social implications of new media technologies, and addresses points that have been neglected by more mainstream media scholars since the first critiques of interactive media.' Mohammad Kazeroun, European Journal of Communication

Brilliant, important book on an emerging phenomenon
By Frank
Web based communities feature extraordinary economies of fandom, favors, and friendship. But who ends up with most of the money they generate? Think about all the work you put into a Facebook or LinkedIn profile, and why people like Mark Zuckerberg, Reid Hoffman, or the few thousand people surrounding them are getting extremely rich from it. Are these "Lords of the Cloud" (as Jaron Lanier styles them) paragons of capitalist virtue? Or are they really economic actors of a much older vintage: bosses of digital sharecroppers, or feudal aristocrats living high (and autocratically) from the sweat, distraction, and typing of a mass precariat?

This edited collection provides subtle and powerful responses to these questions. It features contributions from some of the world's top critical internet theorists. Editor Trebor Scholz has also taken care to weave the essays into a coherent whole. This collection should shake up how we conceive of the "social contract" prevailing online. If you sympathize with any of the powerful critiques of internet governance by Rebecca Mackinnon, danah boyd, or Susan Crawford, you will find much provocative and helpful material in this book to ground a politico-economic critique of web governance structures. You'll also find acute psychological analysis from Jodi Dean and Mark Andrejevic on the motivations and drives of participants.

I will write more later, but for now: highly, highly recommended.

Required Reading
By misterskittles
For those interested in the theorization and operations of the Internet in the age of the "Web 2.0" hallucination, this volume is required reading. The book came from the 2009 "Internet as Playground and Factory" conference at the New School. As an attendee of the conference I can attest it was a fantastic event.

Scholz asks, "What does it mean to be a digital worker today?" The answers are varied, complex, and subtle. These systems, including the one where you now read this review, and amplified in systems like Facebook, are where involvement with them is a site of value creation. As an Amazon review, I am expending labour, and adding value to Scholz's book (which it deserves) and to Amazon, which has - to over simplify - almost single-handedly destroyed commercial bookstores in North America and made Bezos et al very wealthy. Their wealth derives from the involvement and labour of those such as myself, and your labour expended in reading this review. Our attention, time in our lives which is passing here, is something we won't and can't get back - a precious commodity. This volume explicates a variety of analyses, discontinuities, and intensifications of wealth extraction in the realm of web-based environments of value creation and labour exchange.

The book is divided into four parts: Part I, the Shifting of Labor Markets; Part II, Interrogating Modes of Digital Labor; Part III, the Violence of Participation; Part IV, Organizing Networks in an Age of Vulnerable Publics. Each Part features several essays by some of the leading minds of internet theory. Each contributes its insight to the notion of "Digital Labor", and their organisation is part of what makes this book so worthwhile. All of the essays are extremely good and well worth reading. Length constraints in Amazon prohibit me from discussing each, so I will touch on a few that resonated with me. In each section, the effects of this peculiar labour formation are examined. One of the salient and central features of this labour is the development of unpaid / insanely low paid digital labour.

In part I, this labour is amply discussed in essays by Andrew Ross and Tiziana Terranova. Sean Cubitt argues for radical changes and strategies of resistance for a more sensible, human, and humane future "beyond the tyranny of instrumental reason and cash." This part concludes with McKenzie Wark who suggests that the rhetoric of "gamification" is suboptimal as it contributes to this growing "free labour" condition.
The question of what is the exchange and structure for this digital labour comes to the fore in part two with chapters by Patricia Ticineto Clough, Abigail DeKosnik, and Jodi Dean. In another chapter, Ayhan Aytes discusses online production systems, such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk, and how these new unregulated labour markets, like German Gastarbeiter program, are models of immigration without rights, echoing Sean Cubitt's chapter who notes that the subaltern "were governed without the possibility of governing. Today exclusion of immigrants and refugees, governed by coercive actions in which they have no say (Abizadeh 2008), defines the political", and amplified by Jodi Dean noting the affective economy of labour is paid with convenience; a few grow wealthy while labour receives little in return except "fun". *It is this cross-talk from chapter to chapter that makes this volume resonate.*

Part Two interrogates this Free Labour, and Part Three examines its violence and contradictions. Lisa Makamura's essay on the Racialisation of Labor in the World of Warcraft, where online game currencies are exchanged for real currencies and industries have emerged where people, especially in East Asia, and sometimes prisoners, spend countless hours playing these online games - an echo, a resonance, again, of Cubitt and Aytes - and as this is in the context of a "Game", it echoes Wark's warnings regarding gamification...

Digital Labour concludes in Part IV, bringing theory and vision together. Michel Bauwens investigates where P2P is the ideology of the new cognitive working class. Christian Fuchs brings a Marxist labour analysis to Web 2.0 labour and notes that the conditions of digital labour result in a level of exploitation that is asymptotic to infinity! Ned Rossiter and Soenke Zehle conclude with a critical engagement of the culture of the code and associated technologies - networks of networks - speaking "of organized networks as new institutional forms", that "create figures of the universal capable of grasping the political dimension of processes of collaborative constitution at an unprecedented scale."

Again, we hear harmonics of the voices in Part One - a strength of this volume is how the ideas in each essay reference others, forming a narrative of the idea of Digital Labor. A clear picture is painted, a text is heard: what digital labour is made of, what forms it economically, politically, affectively, and philosophically, what surrounds it and reproduces it, and the results: infinite exploitation and a promise of organised networks of resistance.

This book is essential to anyone interested in "what's really going on" in the Internet, especially theorists, educators, and informed readers in the subjects of digital media, internet theory and similar topics, who will find this volume valuable as the authors in this volume are some of the foremost thinkers and theorists of internet theory.

Readers of books like "Cognitive Capitalism, Education and Digital Labor" by Peters and Bulut or "Networks Without a Cause" by Geert Lovink will find this book a valuable addition to their archive. "Digital Labor" stand out in the field of internet studies - as much of the discussion regarding the internet is dominated by corporate sales hackery and gee-whiz technophilia on one end, or a kind of apolitical, values-free analytical approach to digital technology on the other. This book puts up with none of that. Every chapter bristles with ethical and political investigations, and as a whole, they form a stringent and blistering critique of the Web 2.0 Internet project and the digital labor that makes it possible.

Read This Book.

Free labor
By Pedro Demo
Marxist interpretation of capitalist labor exploitation is used in a new moment of global economy, whereby Scholz and colleagues analyze surplus dynamics in free labor of digital platforms, such as Facebook, Google, YouTube etc. There are, of course, multiple dimensions, by far more complex, of such labor conditions: some underline pleasurable, creative sides, as well as (residual) chances of making a living; other prefer to question free labor, unpaid labor, free time theft, privacy invasion and the overall abusive monetization of access. There is also cognitive, immaterial, knowledge-based work, that offers the opportunity to revisit theoretically Marx’s notion of “general intellect” and consequent new exploitation horizons in labor. Very nice book, provocative, sometimes more by philosophy driven than by empirical evidence, although there is plenty of such evidence in millions of users who give unpaid attention to social media.
