So why not write about it. SOLITARY PLEASURES explores masterbation in ways you've never thought about before. It's a rich academic anthology (watch out for those big words) with essays that are important to the study of sex and sexuality--"masterbation for the mind" is the way I like to think about this collection.

Berber women in question

This work is flawed: the author presents life before French colonialism as authentically Algerian and doesn't even reference the history of the country as a product of Islamic/Arab and Ottoman conquest. She has a tendency to overuse phrases such as: 'Algerians thought that...' as if they were homogeneous. Worst of all she refers to Berberism as 'anti-Muslim and anti-Arab' -- twice, without even a variation of phraseology -- and that this phrase is the quite literally the only mention of the Berber people she makes within the whole post-colonial section of the book. For someone who claims to be filling the 'silence' this omission of the concerns of one third of the population is very telling.

However, the sections dealing with post-independence legal changes are informative and useful.

Extremely Valuable Resource for Graduate Students (and Practitioners)

As a graduate student in a student affairs master's program, I have found this book to be extremely valuable. While it hasn't been required for any courses, I have used it every semester for at least one paper/project.

Each chapter of the book focuses on a different student population and does a great job of summarizing common challenges, applicable theories, and practical strategies for supporting each sub-population.

Product not as advertised

The title of the ebook includes the words "mp3 value pack." As other reviewers stated, the mp3s are nowhere to be found. Endless attempts to solve this problem through both the original publisher and Amazon have gotten me nowhere. If you need this book (with the ESSENTIAL listening examples) just buy the insanely priced physical copy with CDs. I've had to look up every song for my World Music class elsewhere because of this inconvenience. Not a good experience

The music files DO come with this purchase if you purchase it digitally.

If you read in the beginning of the book after the table of contents it tells you to send an email to AcademiceBooksSupport@informa.com with proof of purchase in order to access the MP3 files. My email was returned within 24 hours with a link and access code to a site to download the music files for all 3 CD's. How to complain when the CD's cost $40 and the book upwards of $50 but renting the book and getting the MP3's for $14. Win-win.

This is a great text. I am using it to teach a World Music class and it has a lot of information and examples.
Many people rated this low becuase they said it did not come with the Mp3. That is not the case. At the end of the table of contents is says to email AcademiceBooksSupport@informa.com with proof of purchasing the eBook (I just forwarded my email from Amazon) and they email you back with a code. After you have that code it is a simple process and you have access to the Mp3.

Shirley Strum, in Almost Human: A Journey into the World of Baboons ( LJ 10/15/87), described the resistance she met when her observations of baboons undermined theories of male social dominance. Haraway probes deeper into the origins of a male bias in primatology and provides interesing sketches of this science's founding fathers and recent women scientists. Excellent, thought-provoking work

Although Haraway is better known for her later Cyborg Manifesto, Primate Visions is arguably better and more insightful, and is certainly a clearer and more accessible work. Primate Visions takes the reader through the history of primatology, tracing the science's roots in racism, sexism, and colonialism. Haraway begins by outlining the early 20th century American museum exhibits that furthered the racist agenda of social Darwinism, and moves through descriptions of inhumane psychological research done on primates, the implications of young women recruited to do some of the first field work with apes (including Jane Goodall), and feminist sociobiological and anthropological theories. Haraway's intense prose is supplemented by provocative and heart-wrenching illustrations. All in all, a book that challenges our preconceptions of scientific research as incorruptible and free of bias.

this book inspired a review this clever

The first paragraph of Matt Cartmill's review of Donna Haraway's Primate Visions book. It appeared in the International Journal of Primatology (Vol. 12, No. 1, 1991)

This is a book that contradicts itself a hundred times; but that is not a criticism of it, because its author thinks contradictions are a sign of intellectual ferment and vitality. This is a book that systematically distorts and selects historical evidence; but that is not a criticism, because its author thinks that all interpretations are biased, and she regards it as her duty to pick and choose her facts to favor her own brand of politics. This is a book full of vaporous, French-intellectual prose that makes Teilhard de Chardin sound like Ernest Hemingway by comparison; but that is not a criticism, because the author likes that sort of prose and has taken lessons in how to write it, and she thinks that plain, homely speech is part of a conspiracy to oppress the poor. This is a book that clatters around in a dark closet of irrelevancies for 450 pages before it bumps accidentally into its index and stops; but that is not a criticism, either, because its author finds it gratifying and refreshing to bang unrelated facts together as a rebuke to stuffy minds. This book infuriated me; but that is not a defect in it, because it is supposed to infuriate people like me, and the author would have been happier still if I had blown out an artery. In short, this book is flawless, because all its deficiencies are deliberate products of art. Given its assumptions, there is nothing here to criticize. The only course open to a reviewer who dislikes this book as much as I do is to question its author's fundamental assumptions--which are big-ticket items involving the nature and relationships of language, knowledge, and science.

This review alone makes me want to read it. Must be a brilliant book to have flummoxed the reviewer so.

Usually when I have trouble getting through a book, I place some blame on the author for poor writing. But Haraway's writing is brilliant, just so theoretically dense that if I really want to understand, it takes me an hour to read 12-15 pages. This is an incredible work of scholarship, will change the way you think about humanity's relationship with the world.

The topics included in this collection of essays springing from a Princeton University conference range from black nationalism in the hip-hop community to the disco scene's vision of gay identity to hard-core rock and its evolving relationship to feminism. Among the many perceptive arguments advanced is Sarah Thornton's contention that youth subcultures enjoy negative media attention and provoke public "moral panic" as a marketing strategy. In assessing the role of culture in catalyzing social change, most of these writers see styles and rituals as means by which economically and socially marginalized youths claim public territory for themselves. Some suggest that the revolutionary rock of the '60s was more fantasy than reality; Robert Christgau notes the political ambivalence behind anthems such as the Beatles' "Revolution" and Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth." Great Collection

This is an awesome collection of essays. If anyone is interested in popular culture, especially as it relates to music, then this book is for you. I attended the youth music and youth culture conference, and when I learned that Ross & Rose compiled the essays I was ecstatic.
The best essays in this collection belong to vogue dancer Willi Ninja, Lady Kier Kirby from Deee-Lite talking about voue dancing, and Tricia Rose's discussion on Hip-Hop origins.
IF you are interested in popular contemporary dance, check out the section on the dance continuum. THis is a good book that provides some incite into the world of contemporary culture. Enjoy.
