Missing the mark?
By Cara Mould
This book presents a sophisticated dialogue between several prominant feminist theorists in academia today. While reading, however, I kept thinking that they just may have missed the mark. The book was intended to be a dialogue debating and unpacking many of the contemorary dilemmas in feminism today. However, I found this dialogue to be so personal and sometimes catty that I began to wonder what the point was. I liked Drucilla Cornell's essay on how to "do" ethical feminism because it dealt with tangible, workable issues in feminism. I found that many of the other essays smacked of metaphysical arguements that I just couldn't apply to my life or my own work in feminism. For example, there was a lengthy arguement over whether feminism is postmodern. While reading this banter I had the distinct feeling that it was becoming a linguistic, not a theoretical arguement. Also, throughout the book, obscure examples were used and not explained and I was left feeling inadequate and confused. This book is an excellent resource for those who are accomplished in feminist studies and who are interested in the personal relationships feminist theorists. It is imperative that those reading this collection have a strong base in feminist theory and a dictionary in tow. I felt about this book the way I feel about most contemporary feminist theory; that it is a lot of talk and no action, that it is inaccesible, written for the privileged. I am often saddened that such talent can be so misdirected and wasted on intra-babble within academia instead of trying to reach women and men that feminism should really be for.

Letters to Cristina: Reflection on My Life and Work, by Paulo Freire

Paulo Freire is regarded by many as the most significant educational thinker of the twentieth century. This volume offers Freire's own intimate retrospection of his life and work. These reflections, dedicated to his niece Cristina, provide a backdrop for a deeper understanding of how his experiences are linked to his philosophical and pedagogical work.

From Publishers Weekly
Author of the seminal Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Freire further defines his philosophy of education and politics in 18 letters to his niece, Cristina. With Pedagogy now in a newly revised 20th anniversary edition, Freire looks back from his home in Brazil upon a life interrupted by 20 years of exile after the coup d'etat in 1964. He still insists on the right of the poor and illiterate to an education that will enable them "to be"?to become everything it is within their potential to be. Not a formally organized book, nor a series of essays, Letters to Cristina is necessarily discursive and sometimes repetitive as Freire stresses the themes that comprise his life's work. As relevant for Americans as it is for Brazilians, Freire's new work attacks a continuing pedagogy that would have students merely rely on memorization of facts instead of developing the critical-thinking skills necessary for becoming fully invested citizens, thus turning them into workers who will support the dominant affluent class. As a school administrator, Freire built a school community culture in which students, parents, teachers, administrators, custodians and other workers formed a close-knit family?one in which it is hard to imagine any role for "privatization" experts. Parents in developed nations may check the methodologies in their own schools to ascertain that students are as actively involved as Freire's student/teacher in their own learning. Although Freire's pedagogical terminology can sometimes be daunting, Letters to Cristina is an important read for educators and parents.

From Booklist
Freire is well known for his literacy work in Latin American and Africa and for his classic Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1993 ed.). His work is essential reading for literacy activists and for citizens (scholars and teachers included) committed to the values of education. With Letters, Freire frames his autobiography, as it were, in the form of epistles to his niece. He looks back on his childhood and youth, his life as an intellectual, his long exile from Brazil, and the educational and political minefield as we come to the end of the century. The letters on his childhood and youth are particularly inspiring. Other works by Freire include The Politics of Education (1984), Literacy: Reading the Word and the World (1987), and Pedagogy of the City (1993). Bonnie Smothers

A great educator reveals his thoughts
By Linda Burgess
Paulo Freire, viewed by many as the the most significant thinker in education in the 20th century, looks at his own thought processes in this book of letters to his niece. He explains here how he writes and rewrites, how his educational theories relate to current political debates, how he responded to his exile from his native Brazil when his teachings raised the consciousness of the peasant class to threatening levels. The book gives fascinating glimpses into the life of a great educator who loved his students deeply and who believed in their abilities to think for themselves.

From Library Journal
Frug, one of this country's most noted feminist legal scholars, embodies the antiessentialist feminist doctrine in eight essays collected here, three of which were published during her lifetime and five uncompleted ones issued in various law reviews after her 1991 murder. They are divided into three sections: "Feminist Doctrine," "Re-reading Contracts," and "A Postmodern Feminist Legal Manifesto." Frug's writing is often humorous and always penetrating, as she traces the history of legal sexual equality, reviewing important court cases. She also analyzes conservative feminist and progressive feminist readings of Carol Gilligan's In a Different Voice (Harvard Univ. Pr., 1982), as well as gendered aspects of a contracts casebook. Her unfinished "A Feminist Postmodern Legal Manifesto" ends the book; after Frug's stabbing death, this essay was the subject of a controversial parody by the Harvard Law Review . Ironically, her "Manifesto" reveals how the law persists in permitting, even mandating, the terrorization, maternalization, and sexualization of the female body. Highly recommended for women's studies and law collections.

The intellectual and the popular: Irving Howe and John Waters, Susan Sontag and Ethel Rosenberg, Dwight MacDonald and Bill Cosby, Amiri Baraka and Mick Jagger, Andrea Dworkin and Grace Jones, Andy Warhol and Lenny Bruce. All feature in Andrew Ross's lively history and critique of modern American culture. Andrew Ross examines how and why the cultural authority of modern intellectuals is bound up with the changing face of popular taste in America. He argues that the making of "taste" is hardly an aesthetic activity, but rather an exercise in cultural power, policing and carefully redefining social relations between classes.

A modern Bible for the Popular Culture
By S. Meimaris
Andrew Ross has done a terrific job here, with this in depth fascinating study of the parameters of Popular Culture that touches on so many subjects it is impossible to describe. Here you will find all kinds of explorations that have to do with Jazz, Poetry, Painting, Politics and Rock n' Roll all interconnected by the searing intelligence of Ross, who is able to connect so many disparate subjects and draw valid and penetrating conclusions that will help anyone draw some valid conclusions about the influence of Popular Culture on Highbrow Culture and vice versa in our confusing modern times. Very helpful for anyone interested in Art and Sociology.

The book arrived speedily and in condition as described. Strange to realise that a book may have litterally no value in terms of money but can be made money on via the cost of handling. Happy to support this part of the economy.

The World of Wal-Mart: Discounting the American Dream (Routledge Series for Creative Teaching and Learning in Anthropology), by Nick Copel

This book demonstrates the usefulness of anthropological concepts by taking a critical look at Wal-Mart and the American Dream. Rather than singling Wal-Mart out for criticism, the authors treat it as a product of a socio-political order that it also helps to shape. The book attributes Wal-Mart’s success to the failure of American (and global) society to make the Dream available to everyone. It shows how decades of neoliberal economic policies have exposed contradictions at the heart of the Dream, creating an opening for Wal-Mart. The company’s success has generated a host of negative externalities, however, fueling popular ambivalence and organized opposition.

The book also describes the strategies that Wal-Mart uses to maintain legitimacy, fend off unions, enter new markets, and cultivate an aura of benevolence and ordinariness, despite these externalities. It focuses on Wal-Mart’s efforts to forge symbolic and affective inclusion, and their self-promotion as a free market solution to social problems of poverty, inequality, and environmental destruction. Finally, the book contrasts the conceptions of freedom and human rights that underlie Wal-Mart’s business model to the alternative visions of freedom forwarded by their critics.

Review

This marvelous book analyzes how Wal-Mart assembles a seductive, imagined world of material abundance and folksy inclusion―even as its own corporate practices undermine the American Dream and intensify economic polarization. Through their compelling story of Wal-Mart, Copeland and Labuski offer readers a clear window into central economic policies and trends of the early 21stcentury―neoliberalism, globalization, the increased contingency of labor, and the erosion of local economies and places―as well as an array of counter-movements to such trends. This illuminating book is terrific for undergraduate courses in social inequality, rural sociology, globalization, American studies, labor, economic geography, environmental sustainability, and business ethics.

--Barbara Ellen Smith, Sociology and Women’s and Gender Studies, Virginia Polytechnic Institute

The World of Wal-Mart teaches us how to read a force of neoliberal commerce so powerful it feels like a force of nature, so big it overwhelms the American Dream itself. The Wal-Mart of this book is a supercharged mega-magnet pulling into its wake big box sprawl, shopping addictions, boarded up Main Streets, patriotism, a loyal workforce, an astounding array of cheap products, the promise of thrift, reduced legal protections for organized labor, and ordinary anxieties set adrift as consumers push their baskets along its aisles. It’s a centrifuge spinning off elements: an aura of normalcy, Christian family values, smiley faces, low prices and low wages, guilt, derision, deregulation, law suits, the hidden costs of its business model. This Wal-Mart is a public secret that has turned the consolidation of power and the concentration of wealth in America into an ordinary ditty orchestrating what everyone knows but we can’t quite recognize. This remarkable book expertly puts it together for us.

--Kathleen C. Stewart, Anthropology, University of Texas at Austin

Incisive, vividly analyzed, and utterly teachable, this book examines Wal-Mart as a product and producer of contemporary American society. Probing how Wal-Mart works from production to consumption to public relations, this outstanding book offers far-reaching arguments about the power and influence of corporations and the politics of freedom, labor, and value in the United States today.

Peter Benson, Anthropology, Washington University in Saint Louis

Told with verve and momentum, this gem of a book is ideal for the classroom. It does an exceptional job of showing how America made Wal-Mart, and how Wal-Mart made America. Along the way, The World of Wal-Mart demonstrates why anthropology in particular is well-suited for making sense of the world we live in.
--Steve Striffler, Latin American Studies, University of New Orleans

Great book; great teaching tool
By lily zen
I actually had to purchase this for an anthropology class, but once I started reading it, I had a hard time putting it down. It's a well-written, easily understandable book even for people not familiar with anthropological terms and concepts, and I think because it analyzes such a current social fact, it holds a more contemporary understanding and interest for readers. Like the title says, it's a great book--I've recommended it to several people in my acquaintance--and it's a great teaching tool as it explains anthropological concepts using a contemporary example that people interact with on a daily basis, thus meaning that students are more passionate and engaged with the material.

I was hoping for a bashing of Walmart., but no. This book is rather objective.
By lyndonbrecht
This looks at Walmart from something of an anthropological point of view. It's well done, a compelling read I can see how it would be useful in a class, it's succinct, readable and provoking.

The book is even-handed in describing how Walmart does in fact provide employment and low prices, but does so at the social cost of low wages and squeezing suppliers (and to suppliers' labor environment). This is not a liberal tirade at a cutthroat giant, it is a solid analysis. The book says that 10% of what China makes is bought by Walmart, and that Walmart sells 20% of the groceries sold in the USA.

Copeland credits Walmart with some ethical principles (unlike many analyses) but says that these are subverted by Walmart's commitment to ruthless pricing, ruthlessly fighting unions and their commitment to neoliberal economics. Me, I refuse to buy anything from Walmart, so you may see a bias here.

The Talking Cure: TV Talk Shows and Women, by Jane M. Shattuc

The Talking Cure examines four nationally syndicated television talk shows--Donahue, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo and Sally Jessy Raphael--which are primarily devoted to feminine culture and issues. Serving as one of the few public forums where working-class women and those with different sexual orientations have a voice, these talk shows represent American TV at its most radical. Shattuc examines the tension between talk's feminist politics and the television industry, who, in their need to appeal to women, trades on sensation, stereotypes and fears in order to engender product consumption. However, this genre is not a one-way form of social interaction. The female audience complies and resists in a complex give-and-take, and it is this relationship which The Talking Cure aims to understand and reveal.

From Publishers Weekly
By 1995, 15 daytime talk shows were aired in major U.S. TV markets, ending the 50-year reign of soap operas as the most popular daytime program format. In this cultural history, Shattuc distinguishes issue-oriented daytime talk shows from other talk shows: aimed at a female audience, these shows are produced by non-network companies for broadcast on network-affiliated stations. Trying to spur active audience participation, the hosts, sometimes with the help of "experts," mediate between guests and audiences on current social issues. Comparing 1994 TV themes with news of "crime and the uncommon" in Joseph Pulitzer's 1884 New York World, Shattuc traces the talk show's evolution from the 1950s late-night celebrity talk format and 1960s daytime celebrity talk shows to the National Enquirer and the "circuslike display" seen on more recent shows, which she describes as "part narrative melodrama and part public affairs." Daytime TV talk shows are allowed a "degree of tawdriness" not found on prime time, and they emphasize class inequities, defending "the little guy" against the reigning power. They provide, says Shattuc, a discourse, a debate for the disenfranchised. The book is structured to carry the reader through every aspect: authenticity, use of actors, the production process, topics and issues (feminism, race, gays), advertising, ratings and controversial confrontational tactics (the "ambush disclosure"), concluding with a look at messages found online in computer bulletin board debates. Nothing is omitted from this exhaustive, much-needed study, the result of numerous interviews and research over a four-year period, involving 240 hours of talk shows, hundreds of questionnaires and exploration of the Museum of Television & Radio archives.

From Booklist
Whether you see Jenny Jones--alleged accessory to the murder of a man who had appeared on her talk show--sympathetically or as another shallow media buffoon, take a look at Shattuc's examination of the TV talk show world. Shattuc might have settled for just a howlingly funny book, full of the day-time talk show fare (themes like "lesbian nuns in love with their grocers" and spectacles like Geraldo Rivera getting his nose broken during an on-screen fracas) that stand-up comics have made staples of late-night talk show mirth. But Shattuc eschews cheap shots and easy laughs in favor of content analysis and a chronicling of "the rise and fall of a participatory form of TV devoted to the public debate of everyday issues by women." In comparing the individual shows by approach, content, and audience, Shattuc offers the means to understand an often confusing or disturbing trend in popular taste. Perhaps next she will look at talk radio, the masculine counterpart to her subject here. Mike Tribby

In comparing the individual shows by approach, content, and audience, Shattuc offers the means to understand an often confusing or disturbing trend in popular taste."

"Nothing is omitted from this exhaustive, much-needed study, the result of numerous interviews and research over a four-year period...."

Interesting talk show book lacks excitement
By A Customer
The Talking Cure is a well researched and written book about talk shows and how they provide a platform for women's issues. Jane Shattuc does an excellent job using outside information and her own surveys and focus groups to provide the background and evidence that talk shows actually do more help than hurt to American society. Each chapter outlines a different aspect of a talk show, from the production to a study of who watches the programs. The book provides lots of information on talk shows in the early 1990's and Shattuc's critical analysis of the genre leaves the reader wondering what exactly he/she thinks about talk shows.

Critical Analysis of Daytime Talk
By A Customer
Jane Shattuc goes into detail analzying four major daytime talk shows of the early 1990's and how they reflect womens issues and ideas. She does extensive (not to mention exhaustive) research on how talk shows are made, who watches talk shows, and what talk show topics reflect in today's society. I found some of her analyzations a bit long (ex: a long chapter on Freudian psychology), but the undertones of each talk show topic (re: feminist ideals) and how talk shows were made did spark some interest. Shattuc's use of lots of quotes and facts does provide adequite information for one's own critical analysis of the talk show genre. The Talking Cure is a good book if you're looking for something that will make you think.

Learning Outside the Classroom: Theory and Guidelines for Practice, by Simon Beames, Pete Higgins, Robbie Nicol

Learning Outside the Classroom outlines theory and practice that will enable and encourage teachers to systematically and progressively incorporate meaningful outdoor learning opportunities into their daily teaching activities in a wide variety of environments and with diverse populations of pupils. This is the first textbook based around the curriculum for prospective and practising primary and secondary teachers and other outdoor educators. The principles and examples presented are intended to be adapted by teachers to suit the needs of their students in ways that draw upon content offered by the local landscape and its natural and built heritage.  Although the focus of this book is ‘the real world’ beyond the classroom, it is also about good teaching ― wherever it takes place. While there are chapters on practical issues such as risk-management and supervising groups outdoors, the chapters on curriculum, sustainability, curiosity, responsibility, and educational communities will serve as a valuable guide for anyone interested in applying educational theory to practice.

The arguments and ideals of Beames, Higgins and Nicol build a robust foundation for engagement with the outdoors as central to the purposes and practices of all education."
―Australian Journal of Outdoor Education

"This excellent book should prompt us all to reflect on whether we need to get out more. It includes new teaching ideas and masses of justification for teachers who already make some use of outside spaces, as well as reassurance and practical guidelines for thoese who have become too classroom-bound."

KIndle Version Graphics are Unreadable
By Peter Bryant
This review is for the Kindle version of the text ONLY. Do not get it without the print version. The book itself is outstanding; but, the Kindle version is horrible. Unlike most texts, it is not possible to zoom in on the figures and tables. They are too small to read; and, changing the font doesn't change the size of the figures. This makes it relatively useless for anyone who actually wants to use the figures and tables to understand the textual references.
