Sobering View of Academia
By Consumer Who Cares
This book is a very good overview of academic careers in many countries. It's depressing and sobering how little academics are paid (especially in the humanities), and how many of them can't even get full-time jobs (forget tenure), and essentially live hand to mouth. Again, especially the humanities seem to fare very badly. You can probably earn more money as a cashier at Trader Joe's.

A fascinating series of case studies of a dying species--the full-time academic. Due to the economic pressures many universities face, adjunct faculty are becoming the backbone of the professoriate in many countries, and in too many countries the best and brightest students are eschewing academic careers because the remuneration is not nearly as attractive as it is in the private sector. This book is exceedingly well researched, and should be required reading for all government leaders in the 28 countries surveyed.

Greek pottery was exported around the ancient world in vast quantities over a period of several centuries. This book focuses on the Greek pottery consumed by people in the western Mediterranean and trans-Alpine Europe from 800-300 BCE, attempting to understand the distribution of vases, and particularly the reasons why people who were not Greek decided to acquire them. This new approach includes discussion of the ways in which objects take on different meanings in new contexts, the linkages between the consumption of goods and identity construction, and the utility of objects for signaling positive information about their owners to their community. The study includes a database of almost 24,000 artifacts from more than 230 sites in Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, and Germany. This data was mapped and analyzed using geostatistical techniques to reveal different patterns of consumption in different places and at different times. The development of the new approaches explored in this book has resulted in a shift away from reliance on the preserved fragments of ancient Greek authors’ descriptions of western Europe, remains of monumental buildings, and major artworks, and toward investigation of social life and more prosaic forms of material culture.

Justin St. P. Walsh is Assistant Professor in the School of Art at Chapman University. He has worked for more than a decade at archaeological sites across the Mediterranean, especially Morgantina in Sicily, and has been the recipient of a Rome Prize, a Fulbright Grant to Greece, and numerous other awards. He is the author of several articles on Greek pottery, cross-cultural interactions, and the protection of cultural heritage.

In this collection of 14 essays, Trinh, a writer, feminist, and filmmaker, explores unconventional documentary filmmaking and literary techniques. Typically, documentary styles have kept a distance between subject and viewer, creating a sense of mastery in the viewer. By stressing form rather than content, boundaries of the acceptable in artform are transgressed, resulting in a nonlinear movement that leads the viewer into a profound experience that does not have to make sense. In this well-documented book, Trinh explores semiotic ideas of Michel Foucault and Roland Barthes, along with the works of Zora Neale Hurston and Helene Cixous, among others. Illustrated with footage from her films, the form of Trinh's book plays a major role in the presentation of its content. A wonderful volume, this is recommended for academic libraries, especially those that support programs in film and women's studies.

Trinh Minh-ha is Chancellors' Distinguished Professor in Women's Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and Associate Professor of Cinema at San Francisco State University. Among her films is Surname Viet Given Name Nam. She is the author of Women, Native, Other: Writing Postcoloniality and Feminism and, most recently, has coedited Out There: Marginalization in Contemporary Culture.

About the Author
Ian Almond is Assistant Professor of English Literature at Bosphorus University, Istanbul, Turkey, and has taught courses on the representation of Islam in the Western tradition at a number of universities including the University of Edinburgh, the Freie Universitat (Berlin), and the Universita di Bari (Italy). He is author of three books -- Sufism and Deconstruction (Routledge, 2004), The New Orientalists (2007), and a military history of Muslim-Christian alliances, Two Faiths, One Banner (2008).

Graham St John is a Research Associate at the University of Queensland’s Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, and was recently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Interactive Media and Production at the University of Regina, Saskatchewan, and an SSRC Residential Fellow at the School for Advanced Research, Santa Fe, New Mexico. His recent book Technomad: Global Raving Countercultures was published by Equinox in 2009. His edited collections include Victor Turner and Contemporary Cultural Performance (Berghahn 2008), Rave Culture and Religion (Routledge, 2004), and FreeNRG: Notes From the Edge of the Dance Floor (Common Ground, 2001). He is the Executive Editor of Dancecult: Journal of Electronic Dance Music Culture. (www.dj.dancecult.net).
