A head & shoulder above "An Introduction"

Undoubtedly, this is a great book. The reason I rated four was because this book is much more technical that "An Introduction" to L2 acquisition. I felt some chapters are mainly related to theoretical linguistics than SLA or maybe my expectations were different the title of this book.
I would certainly recommend this book to those who are into applied linguistics an linguistics.

Poor-quality binding and haphazard-seeming layout

The layout of this book is distracting. Theories from linguistics seem poorly characterized and represented. The general tone of narration is unscientific. Perhaps I'm just not enamored of this approach to language acquisition, or to this field (second-language acquisition, ESL pedagogy), in general, so I suppose I shouldn't fault the author, who is eminent in the field. Perhaps it's just esthetics--I think the previous edition of this book is better laid-out and easier to read (typographically speaking). Major complaint is the poor quality of the book binding--the pages near the back of the book have started falling out and I've had to tape them back in, to hold them together. I take *exceptionally* good care of all my books, and I was hoping to sell this back, but the quality of the binding makes that impossible now.

Although I haven't finished reading the whole book, its been a great, informative, and beneficial book for me to read and study for
my TESOL Master's program. It has questions to challenge the reader and from time to time tasks to do. I would recommend to
any linguistic student or anyone preparing to become a TESOL/ESL instructor in the future.

The book tells feminist fairy stories that are gentle with the guys too. Jack Zipes, the editor is, after all, a man. I've used the book with students, grandchildren, fellow feminists - all to a warm welcome. Highly recommended.

Front of the Next Wave

This book is divided into three parts. The first, "Feminist Fairy Tales for Young (and Old) Readers," is the selection of stories you want to read aloud to your daughter or son. These stories have sophisticated subjects and good language, but no lengthy exposition of narrative that bogs down a reading out loud. Most set up admirable gender roles, but some, such as "Snow White," are explicitly political, and can help you raise good activists.
The second section, "Feminist Fairy Tales for Old (and Young) Readers," is comprised of more structurally complex stories that invite a silent reader to take time and try to swallow them. Though intended for adult readers, literate children can follow them, and for the most part should be encouraged to do so early and often. Sex roles and social station dominate these stories, but we get glimpses of how these issues are impacted by war, work, and more.
The third section, "Feminist Literary Criticism," is pretty slow-moving. Most of us are already familiar with the idea that fairy tales have detrimental effects on our children, especially our daughters, and while we may be briefly interested in a scholarly explanation of why this is so, the common reader won't get as much good out of this part as the previous two.
Educator, writer, and scholar Jack Zipes has compiled here an excellent antidote to the stultifying fairy tales that molded the minds of most of us when we were young. Zipes is the editor of several thematic books of fairy tales, and this is neither the least nor the last. Whether you approach this work as a parent, a reader, or a scholar, this book is highly rewarding.

Engaging twists and turns, for young and old alike.

I read this first as a little girl, before i knew how to spell feminism let alone define it. The stories captivated me then for their ability to lead my mind into another land more fantastical than my own. Later in life, re-reading this book i was compelled by the issues, thoughts and questions Zipes raised in my mind. It is not feminism that kills you with its anger, it is feminism that makes you think. Sometimes whimsical, sometimes daring, and sometimes blatant, it always stands there to be read and re-read. A constant delight.

While African Americans consider how to accommodate participation in the feminist and black nationalist movements, Richie has taken on one of the most contested issues within the community: African American women battered by African American men. For her study, Richie concentrates on a group of 37 women detained at Rikers Island, who come from a background of poverty and physical and emotional abuse. Richie claims that their experiences represent the extreme of what many African American women undergo as a result of marginalization and hard choices. Throughout she emphasizes her theory of gender entrapment, whereby society provides these women?most of whom want to conform to societal norms?with no socially acceptable way to change their position, making incarceration almost inevitable. Many of the interviewees were determined not to speak out against African American men, believing that their partners already have fewer opportunities than they do. Others believe that, having participated in criminal acts, they are prohibited from taking advantage of social programs designed to help battered women. Although often academically dry and statistical, Richie's book still allows ample room for the women's compelling life histories. She does not, however, offer suggestions for solutions. Hope doesn't illuminate this book?just cold, hard facts.

a must-read for transformative educators

For educators interested in learning about Vygotsky and how his works inform a transformative education via bilingual literacy classroom studies, this is a go-to read. Luis Moll's writings on Vygotsky are brilliant, and the way Moll writes makes Vygotsky more approachable. As an educator myself, I feel we need more literature like this, written not necessarily for the academic, but the educator, those of us "in the trenches", so to speak. Thanks to the author of this brilliant work! Bravo!

About the Author

Arup Varma is Professor of Human Resource Management at Loyola University Chicago's Quinlan School of Business. From 2002-2007 Arup was Director of the HRER Institute and Chair of the HRM department at the School of Business Administration. Varma earned his Ph.D. from Rutgers University, an M.S. in Personnel Management & Industrial Relations (with honors) from XLRI Jamshedpur (India) and a B.S. in Economics(with honors) from St. Xavier's College, Calcutta, India. Dr.Varma's research interests include performance appraisal, expatriate issues, and HRM in India. He has published over 40 articles in leading journals including Academy of Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Human Resource Management Review and the Journal of World Business. He is also co-founder and President-elect of the Indian Academy of Management.

Pawan Budhwar is a Professor of International HRM and Associate Dean Research at Aston Business School, UK. He is a Co-Founder and first President of the Indian Academy of Management. Budhwar has published over 75 articles in a number of leading journals on International HRM/OB related topics with a specific focus on India. He has also written and/or co-edited 9 books on HRM related topics on: Asia-Pacific, Middle East, Performance Management, India, Developing Countries, Research Methods, Major Works in International HRM and Doing Business in India. He is on the editorial board of over ten journals and is an Associate Editor of Human Resource Management. Budhwar is also an advisor to the Commonwealth Commission for scholarships and fellowships, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and the British Academy of Management and an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences. He is also a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development.

A lot of books in the field give lip service to the idea that gender, sexuality, race, and class are somehow "connected" or "interconnected." This big book shows, convincingly, how they're connected--both historically, and in the present. The text includes stimulating essays on the history of colonialism and modern medicine; well-wrought ethnographic case studies on gender, race, and sexuality; and content-based theory (i.e., theory based on some empirical evidence). An indespensible resource for courses in gender, sexuality, lesbigay studies, and critical race studies.

"This book undertakes an ambitious--even revolutionary--rethinking of law's approach to the family. Martha Fineman seeks to recenter legal and social concepts of family around caregiving and dependency, rather than around the sexual tie between men and women. She offers a positive vision in which the inevitable depedency of some members ("children") is recognized as creating derivative dependency in caregivers ("mothers"). The problem lies not in dependency itself but in society's refusal to dignify, support, and protect it. Despite the alarming title

Despite the rather alarming-sounding title, this is actually a rather innovative and interesting theoretical work about the meaning of family. The author proposes that a new definition of family be legally adopted to reflect practice and need, rather than traditional notions. She uses the mother and child model (this a metaphor for the nurturer and dependant individuals, whatever their age or gender) rather than our idea now that the sexual tie between husband and wife is the tie that binds. So, rather than giving tax breaks and inheritance rights and the myriad of legal advantages to protect a family on the basis of marriage, Martha Fineman proposes that the same advantages be provided by our society to a single mother with a child, or a man in his 30s taking care of his elderly parents, or a woman who lives with and supports her developmentally disabled brother, etc. It is really a completely radical idea, but it is argued persuasively. If she can't convince you, she will at least make you reconsider the assumptions one makes about families and their legal rights and responsibilities.

Can't recommend this book highly enough. A radical theory of family structure that outlines traditional patriarchy and addresses the requirements of feminism and caregiving in terms of the priority of well-being and efficacy in family relationships.
