William J. Coburn is a psychoanalyst and licensed clinical psychologist in Los Angeles. Complex but easily comprehendible

Coburn presents the ideas of Complexity Theory as it applies to Psychoanalytic theory and therapy, and opens new doors to the understanding of change. The author is not only quite knowledgeable, he presents his view logically and quite understandably.

This book is repetitive and often reads as self-congratulatory. The author uses words like "relentless/relentlessly" so often that they lose their meaning. The ideas Coburn uses would have been much better expressed in a single paper. This is yet another book celebrating the novelty of the relational turn in analytic thinking - but when this novelty has been celebrated for 25 years, it is not novel. There are better works on complexity theory and analysis - e.g. Galatzer-Levy's papers. And on relational psychoanalysis - Donnel Stern comes to mind as truly making new contributions.

Coburn's book also fails to provide more than cursory clinical examples of what he finds so exciting.

We currently have members in over 60 countries, and Ambassadors for over 50 of these. James C. Hayton, PhD, is the David Goldman Professor of Innovation and Enterprise, and Director of the Centre for Knowledge, Innovation, Technology, and Enterprise at Newcastle University. His research focuses on the role of human resource management and human capital in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in new and established organizations.

Michal Biron is a lecturer at the Graduate School of Management, University of Haifa (Israel), and a visiting researcher in the department of Human Resource Studies at Tilburg University (the Netherlands).

Liza Castro Christiansen, DBA and MBA, is a visiting academic fellow at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, England. Liza is an external lecturer at the Copenhagen Business School and a senior lecturer at the Aarhus Business Academy in Denmark.

Bård Kuvaas is Professor of Organizational Psychology at BI Norwegian School of Management in Oslo. All are published by Routledge. Donna Landry and Gerald MacLean are Associate Professors of English at Wayne State University.

This is an excellent book which takes an in depth look at convicted rapists in an attempt to understand why men rape. It's not a perfect study, as the author freely admits, because it only includes men who have actually been convicted and incarcerated for rape. But despite the limitations of the sample, the book does an excellent job of attempting to answer the question "why do men rape?". It is an enlightening and important book, and one which may provide its female readers with an understanding which will allow them to better protect themselves from dangerous situations.

Critical Ethnography: An Exemplar in Theory and Practice

This text in critical qualitative methodology is so clearly written and usefully crafted that it stands as an exemplar in its capacity to deliver both theory and practice related to conducting critical qualitative research. Carspecken delivers extremely practical and clear suggestions for conducting research, while including the reader in the theoretical dialogue entailed in the pratice of critical ethnography. I appreciated the way Carspecken did not foster any division between the practice of critical research and the theory of critical research.
The five stages outlined in his approach represent substantive features of conducting the research, not a five-stage recipe. These five stages are linked by a tightly knit theory of meaning. Each stage, then, has a substantive connection not only to the purposes of critical research, but to the epistemology of critical research. His personalistic style and wonderful examples make the theory and practice highly accessible.
There are too many novelties to this text to list them all, but one of the most important ones is the extent to which Carspecken contributes to critical method through the integration of important postmodern insights.
For anyone interested in qualitative research in general, and critical ethnography in particular, this book is a must.
