These issues are explored through case studies which utilize different social and cultural historical methods, but with a shared twin purpose: to uncover the related histories of migration, ethnicity, and mental health, and to extend existing scholarly frameworks and findings in this under-developed field of inquiry.

Angela McCarthy is Professor of Scottish and Irish History at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and Associate Director of its Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies. She is the author and editor of several books on Irish and Scottish migration and of a pioneering article on migration, ethnicity, and madness published in Social History of Medicine (2008).

Catharine Coleborne is Associate Professor in History in the History Programme, School of Social Sciences at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Her research interests include histories of families and institutions, mental health and oral histories, colonial psychiatry, ethnicity and gender. Her most recent book is Madness in the Family (2010).

He has written extensively on contemporary art, and is the editor of numerous books, including Art After Modernism (1984), and Rock My Religion: Writing and Art Projects by Dan Graham (1994).

I personally found this book to offer a wide variety on essays that deal with patriarchal models of masculine ideals. It is as informing a book on the subject as you will ever be able to come across with, and it deals with more than just the feminist discourse as it offers a new theoretical framework with which to gaze at the male.

Günseli Berik is Associate Professor of Economics and Gender Studies at the University of Utah. Her recent research focuses on international trade, labor standards and gender wage inequality. She is an Associate Editor of Feminist Economics and a guest editor of the journal’s "Gender, China and the WTO" special issue (2007).

Yana van der Meulen Rodgers is Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Rutgers University. Her research encompasses gender, labor markets, and trade. Dr. Rodgers serves as Associate Editor for Feminist Economics. She received her BA in economics from Cornell University and her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.

Ann Zammit is a development economist who now works independently. Her previous working career included university teaching in the UK and Chile, policy-oriented work for the OECD, OAS and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD), and policy work for the Government of Malta.

This edited book uses migrant marginality to problematize several different aspects of global migration. It examines how many different societies have defined their national identities, cultural values and terms of political membership through (and in opposition to) constructions of migrants and migration. Eye opening!

Miller's blow-by-blow descriptions and transcriptions of sessions with his clients gave me a better sense of Lacanian technique than anything I'd read before, especially the idea of paying attention to the letter. Theory and practice come together and come alive in his case reports in a way that I think will be accessible to psychotherapists from many different backgrounds. Surprisingly readable and eye-opening!

Lacan on the couch

I've read many books on Lacan. He is difficult but worth the effort. Lacan says his focus is on the clinic. Lacanian Psychotherapy demonstrates that the work in the clinic is Lacan's primary goal. Following several case studies "to the letter", Michael Miller has done a wonderful job showing how Lacan's theories have a very "real" impact by "following the letter". The only aspect of the book that I didn't care for was his attempt to be scientific and doubt his own work and thus Lacan's. I felt this was unnecessary, as the results of his "following the letter" of his clients was all that truly mattered. It appears that "following the letter" did allow them to speak more freely and did alleviate some of their "real" suffering. Following Michael's letters allowed my to greatly deepen my understanding of Lacan. Bravo!

Complicates Assumptions about Disney

Disney Discourse is a substantial contribution to the field of Disney Studies. Smoodin's collection offers a range of reactions to the different Disneys that exist: television and film, theme parks, retail, and so forth. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary work is structured in three useful ways. First, it offers some representative materials from Disney's "golden age" that tend to praise Disney (both the man and the corporation). Second, many of the essays consider the reception to Disney. Three, the book is divided into four separate categories that provide an overview of possible approaches to the study of Disney.
As with any collection, not all the essays are of equal analytic strength. There are many good essays, however, particularl in the the sections entitled Cultural Production and Reception. Smoodin's own essay, "How to Read Walt Disney" is, in my opinion, worth the price of the book alone. Even essays which seem more grounded in personal reaction than critique have their worth; they demonstrate the investment individuals have in Disney as a site of debate.
Overall, the result of the book's conscientious structure is to complicate any easy binaries--taken as a collection, Disney Discourse refuses to unreflectively praise Disney or, equally problematic, simply critique Disney. Instead, Smoodin's book offers Disney as a site of investigation, of exploration, and of analysis. Indeed, Disney Discourse might be better renamed Disney Discourses in order to reflect the multiple ways people have approached Disney. Though not all the essays are equally strong, the book is a "must-have" for both serious scholars and Disney enthusiasts alike.

SPOTTY AT BEST

Spotty at best, with, as one commenter noted, a certain built-in agenda or animus against all things Disney. Like many academics there is often a certain ahistorical confusion apparent in the minds of some of the authors of these essays in terms of what "Disney" means. There is a world of difference between what Walt was doing in the 1930s, for instance, and indeed throughout his career, compared to how the Company had been run under Messrs. Eisner and Iger.

Consider Renting

I rented this for a college course last year. The collection of essays as a whole didn't keep my attention, but a couple stood out in the reading. If you need it for a class, I would recommend a rental. The material isn't worth the purchase price of the actual book. Those that are looking for a more detailed view of the Disney empire or of Walt Disney might be better looking elsewhere. The Magic Kingdom is great, cheaper, and a lot more informative.

Indispensable Anthology Offers Best Overview of Cyborg Origins, Unique Interviews + Seminal Texts

This classic anthology, first published in 1995, remains the definitive collection of material covering the history, culture and academic consideration of cyborgs. For me, the most impressive accomplishment of The Cyborg Handbook is the inspiration with which Chris Hables Gray shapes many divergent views of cyborgs into a coherent recognition of life entering a radical new stage of evolution.

I admit to being seduced from the first page by the extraordinary language and vision of Donna Haraway's Foreward -- "Cyborgs and Symbionts: Living Together in the New World Order". Of course if you are new to cyborg texts, her words may feel more like "a warning shot fired 'cross your bow". In a style that is wildly and poetically evocative, Haraway introduces the impossibly high stakes strategy of merging biologies with technologies in the service of survival. She suggests it may be the only strategy that can sustain our species (while also possibly altering us forever.) "This handbook", Haraway explains, "is a valuable guide to the cyborg worlds we willy-nilly inhabit, whether we want to or not."

The Cyborg Handbook offers us 43 separate pieces published between 1960 and 1995. Gray has staged them in a narrative arc that tracks emergence of "the cyborg impulse" resulting from a global convergence of biologies, histories and technologies. Mythological & metaphorical models for cyborgs appear long before technologies arrive to enable it. It is the space program and the demands of modern warfare, as well as increasingly intrusive medical practices, that finally make inevitable the technological augmentation of biology. Perhaps most exciting is the special view provided of "the cyborg genesis" via interviews with pioneer engineers as well as the papers and reports they wrote. From there, this book documents the growing proliferation of cyborg memes in space, in war, in medicine and in imagination production. It goes on to introduce the future with texts on cyborg anthropology and cyborg politics. And now... 20 years after it was first published, with augmented realities and augmented identities rapidly becoming the new normal, The Cyborg Handbook seems more relevant than ever. And while editor Gray has carefully avoided the sensationalism that stains other cyborg-themed book, we must now recognize a reality more shocking, more radical, and more future-altering than any story about the Star Trek humans facing The Borg. I mean (with apologies to Walt Kelly and Pogo) that we have seen The Borg and they is us.

The Cyborg Handbook, though compelling, is not exactly an easy read. Cyborgs were (and still are) a comparatively new subject. I had the sense of multiple new vocabularies being created in front of me as I read -- sort of like taking a train trip on a railroad while it is still being built. Plus there is the thud factor -- 560 pages, 54 of them the index. I found it necessary to allow myself extra time to work through the multiples voices and vocabularies of the diverse and divergent texts. I had an especially hard time navigating the post-modern, poly-syllabic worded socialist/marxist/feminist academic texts. I was thankful for Alan Hill's playful and edgy book design that added visual adventure to often-dry text.

And there are disappointments. Missing, for example, is Donna Haraway's iconic 1985 text "A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist-Feminism in the Late Twentieth Century". You can still buy it on Amazon in several books by Haraway -- in The Haraway Reader as well as Haraway's Simians, Cyborgs, and Women: The Reinvention of Nature.

If you prefer a more reader-friendly introduction to cyborgs -- one you can read in hours instead of days -- I highly recommend Amber Case's An Illustrated Dictionary of Cyborg Anthropology -- just out and also available through Amazon. But even that book, in a list at the end, recommends you also read Chris Hablas Gray's The Cyborg Handbook. And for good reason. There is no other book like it.

Holding a coveted spot on my shelf

I would not suggest this book for someone looking for a quick, easy answer to the world of cyborgs. There are papers here from dozens of authors, each talking about a wholly different aspect of the cyborg - some cover the idea that technology has already turned many of us into cyborgs, others that fetuses are cyborgs, some stick with the traditional notion of the cyborg as half-man half-machine, some examine the role of the cyborg in film. It takes all kinds. And, in sturdy academic practice, some of the authors even give gentle jabs to other papers in the book, noting flaws or the overlooking of some fine point. Most of the research draws from Donna Haraway's original research into cyborgs, but there are a few people that are trying to break away from her hegemonistic mold. For a very entertaining and much needed example of this, try to find the two or three digs at Donna Haraway's definition of cyborg.
This book is one of the most invaluable resources for anyone doing serious research into the idea of the cyborg. Though there is a great interview with Clynes, co-inventer of the term "cyborg," The Cyborg Handbook won't do for primary source material. The bibliography is wildly extensive, however, and the book functions as an excellent starting point for the researcher. For those who aren't afraid to work for it, but who have a more casual interest, this book can be both a starting and ending point.

Dense and Stuffy Reading

The book is an excellent resource for people who love the horror genre. It analyzes the elements of "art horror," in a step-by-step approach. The author strives to explore two questions- 1. why that which we know is not real still frightens us, and 2. why we like to be terrified. The author gives a history of art horror and focuses mainly on the classics (like Frakenstein, Nosferatu, The Shining, etc.) She writes an incredibly in depth primer discussing a very wide range of topics, all in great detail. My main problem with the text is that at times, it is way too in depth, and many times this drudgery is on irrelevant topics. For example, the author spends an entire chapter (80 pages) devoted solely to the purpose of defining horror. From a scholarly perspective, this explanation is great because it defines the art horror genre while leaving no stone unturned, and no gray areas about it. For the casual reader, the text can become dull and redundant. The book was created specially for the education of film students, so I would not recomend it for someone on the lookout for a vibrant and engrossing read.

A excellent academic analysis of various elements in horror.

This essay attempts and succeeds at explaining why horror literature fascinates our culture. I myself had wondered why people write in this genre,and why is that we can enjoy a seemingly strange area of fiction.
I espically recommend this book to any person who is new to horror,and would like to learn about it. Even thought this book is written in a scholarly manner I think the language is down to earth for most any person to read (One final note: If the author is reading this review,please emai me back!)
