Popular portrayals often show Kennedy as a mythic, heroic figure, but these depictions can obscure the details of the president’s actual achievements and challenges. Despite the short length of his time in office, during his presidency, Kennedy dealt with many of the issues that would come to define the 1960s, including the burgeoning Cold War and the growing Civil Rights movement.

Review

"In this sparkling short biography, Jason Duncan provides an exceptionally balanced view of John Kennedy. This gem-like book shows how Kennedy's many travels shaped his later presidency, including the founding of the Peace Corps. On each aspect of Kennedy's life, Duncan clearly and concisely presents both sides before deftly offering his own conclusion."

– William J. Rorabaugh, author of The Real Making of the President: Kennedy, Nixon, and the 1960 Election

"First the Kennedy life, then the myth, then the revisionism. Only now, a half-century on, do we have the distance required to put the thirty-fifth president into perspective. Jason Duncan has given us an insightful, accessible account of Kennedy and his era, reminding us what he accomplished and why it matters."

– H.W. Brands, author of American Dreams: The United States since 1945

"Professor Duncan's concise but absorbing biography of one of America's most unforgettable presidents offers students a rich and well balanced understanding of Kennedy's heritage, achievements, failings, and legacy. Especially insightful are its treatments of his emergence as a national figure, his efforts to manage conflicting traditions and pressures, and his handling of a critical stage in the Cold War."

– Ellis W. Hawley, author of The Great War and the Search for a Modern Order

Review by Charles C. Brown, author of Niebuhr and His Age: Reinhold Niebuhr's Prophetic Role and Legacy
By Amy Richards
Jason Duncan’s biography of John F. Kennedy is lucid and compact, impressively researched, and balanced in judgment of Kennedy’s contributions in a crucial era of American and world history. The first half of the book traces his emergence from family roots in Boston, through his education and wartime service and his fourteen years in the U.S. House and Senate, to his election as president in 1960. The second half focuses on the problems and turning points of JFK’s presidential years, including his establishment of the Peace Corps, his astute handling of the Cuban missile crisis at the height of the Cold War, his role in the nuclear test ban treaty following it, and his timely support of civil rights legislation enacted by Congress soon after his death.
Notable aspects of Duncan’s work are his attention to the role of the Kennedy family in his career, to Kennedy’s historical interests, including his book Profiles in Courage, and to his skill and charisma on television. In Duncan’s pages Cold War liberalism is defined and put into historical perspective. The book, appended with primary documents, is recommended for college history courses and for the general reader. The author is professor of history at Aquinas College, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Lessons for Today
By Oldtowne1
Having come of age when JFK became president and viewing his untimely death as a 19 year old, this book put into much better context the times and political intrigue surrounding his life, so tragically shortened. I really resonated with the description of him as a Cold War liberal shaped by WW II and the subsequent US-Russian global competition . I was in the Air Force '62-'68 so I clearly understand the atmosphere and tensions prevalent in the early sixties, living through DEFCON 2 (and 1) in the Cuban missile crisis and the author shows us how much we owe to JFK and his cool leadership. JFK's approach of a strong defense and support for the military with a pragmatic approach to start to solve the nation's social problems. Working with Congress, he was able to move the needle ahead on the issues of the times--a real centrist in today's terms. Clearly unanswered are what JFK would have done in Vietnam but the author hints to his aversion to CIA input after the Bay of Pigs.
Duncan's pithy commentary (175 pages) is a great read, and the author doesn't waste pages describing a topic. You can dig more deeply into any compelling documents in an extensive bibliography and index. This a great compilation with lessons for all who aspire to the toughest job in the free world.
