Mallison et al. provide bang for buck in this up-to-date account of cutting-edge methods for data collection in Sociolinguistics

Among the available publications in the sociolinguistics literature, there are a good number of volumes that attempt to give a thorough overview of the considerations and approaches necessary for a successful fieldwork expedition (cf. for example L. Milroy and M. Gordon 2003).
While this volume covers much of the crucial information that can be found in such works, the novelty in Mallison et al.'s contribution here lies in their attempt to refine conventional methods by examining cutting-edge approaches to data collection, and reframing both the theoretical and ethical considerations that necessarily follow from new research. In addition, the reader is provided with very useful accounts of time spent in the field by prominent Sociolinguists, which give a very important insight into best practice in the field.
I recommend this publication unreservedly.

It's like being a fly on the wall while the greats talk about data collection

This book was extremely enlightening. What I like about it is that there didn't seem to be any new research reported—the book was strictly about the methodology of sociolinguistics. This book is kinda like sitting in on the conversations during the lunch break at conferences. If you want to know the results of the author's research, go to journal articles or see them present. But if you want to know how they gathered their data for those results, either sit in on those conversations or read this book.
I liked that it covered a wide range of topics like traditional Variationist approaches (the sociolinguistic interview and using written questionnaires) but also some new ideas that I had never heard of before in this field. It is certainly cutting-edge, as the book itself and the previous review described it. The book is structured into 19 short (10-ish page) chapters, many of which have brief (2–3 pg) vignettes to follow that illustrate that chapters point.
Some of the topics that I had never even heard about included collecting data in Virtual Worlds, historical sociolinguistics, the use of written texts as data, and studying performed or scripted speech.
The best part, I thought, was that the book covered things that are just good to know but that you don't hear about too much like social ethics, technology, working with and preserving data, transcription, using video data, making data available, making a corpus from existing or unconventional data, community activism, working with schools, and how to work with the media should they contact you about your research. These aren't the "sexy" parts of sociolinguistics, and they're not what you hear about in presentations or journal articles, but they're just as important for researchers. It was these topics that made the book so stinkin' useful.
I feel like I know the field better and will be able to collect better data now that I've read the book. Not only would I, but I certainly will recommend this book to other researchers.
