Now available in paperback, The Quarrel Between Philosophy and Poetry focuses on the theoretical and practical suppositions of the long-standing conflict between philosophy and poetry. Stanley Rosen--one of the leading Plato scholars of our day--examines philosophical activity, questioning whether technical philosophy is a species of poetry, a political program, an interpretation of human existence according to the ideas of 19th and 20th-century thinkers, or a contemplation of beings and Being.

This collection of essays is a welcome addition to the ever increasing body of work by Stanley Rosen . . . Rosen's essays are unified, not only by their focus on Plato and Aristotle, but by the theme announced in the book's title . . . The Quarrel Between Philosophy and Poetry: A Review
By A Customer
While Rosen's treatment of the tensions characterising the historical 'quarrel' between philosophy and poetry is incontestably brilliant and rigorous, some might find his specialised lexicon a bit daunting. For those with no prior philosophical background (and little Greek), reflections such as the following might seem indecipherable:
'In discussing the difference between aisthesis and episteme, Aristotle says: ton kath' hekaston he kat' energeian aisthesis, he d'espisteme ton katholou; tauta d'en autei pos esti tei phsychei.' (Rosen: 1988: 123)
Ostensibly subtitled 'Studies in Ancient Thought', Rosen does not limit himself to Plato, Aristotle and Socrates (via the former two). While the ancient Greek philosophers do dominate six of ten chapters, Rosen also treats us to a section on 'modern' developments (Enlightenment onward) of the ancient quarrel between the expressions of poetry and philosophy (notably in Chapter 2: 'Philosophy and Revolution'). Rosen also takes up a specific discussion of Heidegger and Nietzsche's respective interpretations of Plato in the latter chapters of the book.
I was generally quite impressed with the density and scope of Rosen's treatment of this complex and difficult subject. I would highly recommend this work to anyone interested in a specialised discussion of the nature of philosophy and poetry.
