An Excellent Collection for the Questioning Academic

Let me be clear: This book of essays was written at a particular moment in time for a particular audience, Back in 1989, those in the humanities were debating the rise of a particular kind of largely literary criticism called the new historicism. The contributors to this collection debate the theoretical, philosophical, methodological, and practical merits, questions, and concerns about this "new historicism". There are essays in this collection by major literary critics and historians - literary and otherwise. This is NOT an introduction to the field, but a particular conversation among a particular group of scholars at a particular time (for an introduction, you might read Gallagher and Greenblatt's "Practicing New Historicism" alongside Greenblatt's "Shakespearean Negotiations").
Now, what strikes me is how relevant and pressing the questions and concerns and even some of the merits of new historicism as raised by the scholars in this collection remain, even after about 26 years - especially given that the new historicism is largely the critical literary methodology/line of thinking de rigouer in the academy these days (combined with various other methods and theories). What is troubling about this is the tendency to blindly follow historicist practices (new or otherwise) without questioning the underlying assumptions that underpin both theory and practice. With essays by Greenblatt, Montrose, Gallagher (classic champions of new historicism) alongside Hayden White, Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, and Joel Fineman (who are critical of NH to varying degrees), the collection provides a wonderful range of arguments that allow the reader (presumably someone who is engaged in some professional capacity as a historian, critic, or scholar) to come to their own conclusions. The book is a varietable buffet. By the time you try a bit of each offering, you may find yourself inclined towards certain dishes over others for seconds - or for making your own dish, as it were.

Too sluggish, pedantic, academic and unreadable for the average person...

They lost me at Hello. I'll try the book again some other time, but this stuff was WAAAAYYY too technical for the average English M.A. (me) just trying to learn something about how the pros want history to be written. Heck, I learned more about the philosophy of history from one short article by Howard Zinn they I ever have from reading some of the professional historians, whose job it is not only to write history, but to convince people like me of the right way to go about it. I would think the first rule of a good writer is to communicate with the reader, but these essays communicate with other historians. That's fine, but put it in a journal, not in a book on Amazon.
