Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation: The New Empathy and Social Justice

"Multicultural teacher education," according to Professor Nadine Dobly "has not fully understood nor engaged empathy." In her work, Rethinking Multicultural Education for the Next Generation: The New Empathy and Social Justice, Dr. Dobly explores a wide range of scholarship to demonstrate how new conceptions of empathy can inform the preparation of today's Millennial teachers for multicultural leadership in the classroom. Dr. Dolby argues that empathetic ways of being form essential "building blocks" for social consciousness and a necessary stepping stone for social justice. Dobly challenges teacher educators to reconsider long-held misconceptions about what it means to have empathy and how human beings naturally come to relate with each other and their environment. She further writes, "Without a strong foundation in empathy and without the tools to translate empathy into justice, our students have no conceivable, practical way to begin the exercise of leadership that is needed to actually do something about the conditions of education and the larger, pressing concerns of the planet."
An engaging and thought-provoking read, I feel this text will be of great interest to those who work for social justice, caring, and equity in the education of future teachers. As a scholar and teacher educator who, like Dobly, has faith in the potential of today's beginning teachers to act towards greater equity and justice in public schools, I found this book both insightful and inspiring.

Essential Reading

As someone who's taught college students for over three decades and grappled with issues of social justice, I can confidently attest to the indispensable value of Prof. Dolby's new book. It appears at a critical juncture, not least because evidence shows that students now have an empathy deficit approaching epidemic proportions. In my opinion, unless the problems and solutions discussed by Prof. Dolby are resolved in the near future, other accomplished in higher education just won't matter very much. This book is one of the very few serious attempts to come to grips with empathy and social issue within the context of multicultural teacher education. Those in the field who fail to consult the wealth of accessible insights here are doing themselves and their students a serious disservice. I can't recommend this book too highly.

Building a Culture of Empathy with Multicultural Education

As the director of the Center for Building a Culture of Empathy, I'm interested in raising the level of empathy in society and actually making it a foundational cultural value. This book lays out the current structure and value system of multicultural education and shows that it has not been terribly effective. Nadine then says that empathy should be the new foundational value for multicultural education and curriculum. That was music to my ears. This is really part of a larger movement to transform all parts of society so that we all stand in each others shoes and look through each others eyes and develop a more caring world community.
