Michael J. Miller, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University, New York, USA and an adjunct professor at Syracuse University, USA. He has been published in The Humanistic Psychologist as well as Lacan and Addictions (Karnac, 2011), and has presented to groups of psychoanalytic clinicians on clinical applications of Lacan.

Eye opening!

Miller's blow-by-blow descriptions and transcriptions of sessions with his clients gave me a better sense of Lacanian technique than anything I'd read before, especially the idea of paying attention to the letter. Theory and practice come together and come alive in his case reports in a way that I think will be accessible to psychotherapists from many different backgrounds. Surprisingly readable and eye-opening!

Lacan on the couch

I've read many books on Lacan. He is difficult but worth the effort. Lacan says his focus is on the clinic. Lacanian Psychotherapy demonstrates that the work in the clinic is Lacan's primary goal. Following several case studies "to the letter", Michael Miller has done a wonderful job showing how Lacan's theories have a very "real" impact by "following the letter". The only aspect of the book that I didn't care for was his attempt to be scientific and doubt his own work and thus Lacan's. I felt this was unnecessary, as the results of his "following the letter" of his clients was all that truly mattered. It appears that "following the letter" did allow them to speak more freely and did alleviate some of their "real" suffering. Following Michael's letters allowed my to greatly deepen my understanding of Lacan. Bravo!
