Nurses and Midwives in Nazi Germany: The

This book is about the ethics of nursing and midwifery, and how these were abrogated during the Nazi era. Nurses and midwives actively killed their patients, many of whom were disabled children and infants and patients with mental (and other) illnesses or intellectual disabilities. The book gives the facts as well as theoretical perspectives as a lens through which these crimes can be viewed. It also provides a way to teach this history to nursing and midwifery students, and, for the first time, explains the role of one of the world’s most historically prominent midwifery leaders in the Nazi crimes.

Review

"a groundbreaking and chilling historical analysis of a medical system in which death becomes a medical cure and nursing professionals view their allegiance to the state, their superiors and society above that of individual patients." – Michael Grodin, Boston University

"All the contributions present a compelling aggregation of the current status of research and give us a good picture of this field. The result is a work that should especially be recommended to health care professionals, midwives and their teachers, while it also outlines the current status of research for historians of the period and medical historians." -Anne-Kathleen Tillack-Graf, University of Potsdam

The Last, *Best* Book About Akion T-4 -- It Belongs In EVERY Library & EVERY Holocaust Archive
By Kayla Rigney
I'm not exaggerating when I say that *Nurses and Midwives in Nazi Germany: The "Euthanasia Programs" is the last, *best* book about Aktion T4. Not only do the editors provide an excellent over-view of how nurses and midwives participated in killing the disabled and mentally ill, but also Susan Benedict gives us new, detailed information on the nurses of Meseritz. For the first time ever, I read excerpts from the nurses' trial testimonies. And I read the testimony of Elly Buchenschuss, the caregiver who said NO.( Because of German law, we cannot know the last names of the perpetrators, but I can honor Elly Buchenschuss the caregiver who refused to kill.) Ms. Benedict writes about the so-called consequences and the nurses' acquittals. I cannot over-emphasize the importance of the chapter on Meseritz-Obrawalde. It alone would be worth the price of the book, but the other chapters are just as informative and every bit as important.

This book shows how healthcare professionals were drawn into the machine of medicalized murder. Doctors were given a choice whether or not to participate in T-4, but nurses, in general, weren't. Doctors gave orders, nurses followed those orders. As Sister points out, many doctors and nurses of the day truly believed in the "euthanasia" of so-called "useless eaters." When an entire system is in place to kill, it's not easy to say No -- especially, when people were sent to concentration camps for distributing Von Galen's sermon. But there were people like Elly who said No -- and none that we know of were sent away to concentration camps. Think about that.

Nurses and Midwives in Nazi Germany: The "Euthanasia Programs" belongs on the shelf beside the works of Friedlander and Burleigh. It's one of the top three books written about Aktion T-4 *in any language.* Buy this book for your archive, for your library, for your own use. It's more than scholarly -- it's inherently readable. When you read it, you'll learn so very much. I know I did.

Speaking as both a T-4 Scholar and as a woman with multiple disabilities, I implore you to learn about the history written in this book. Forewarned is forearmed; and history has a way of repeating itself.

This is an excellent study of the "Euthanasia Programs
By Sarah B.
This is an excellent study of the "Euthanasia Programs." I have found that the most disturbing but helpful insights into the Nazi programs have come from researchers studying the everyday actions of everyone from doctors, nurses, to typists and office managers. This work has excellent research and valuable insights for many scholars. Another book to look at after you read this one I'd recommend also is called "Hitler's Furies." That discusses a few nurses and midwives as well but not nearly as detailed as this phenomenal and important work. "Furies" discusses the bureaucracy and the women who worked behind it-ex. the women who typed up the kill reports from the murders of the SS commanders in the eastern campaigns. Rent or buy this book, I found it very helpful.
